Ranganathan Street — India's Busiest Pedestrian Shopping Street
Ranganathan Street is the undeniable centrepiece of T Nagar's shopping universe. This pedestrianised street stretches for roughly a kilometre and is flanked on both sides by shops selling every conceivable category of goods: sarees and silk fabric, ready-made garments, footwear, accessories, plasticware, electronics accessories, children's toys, and street food. The footfall on busy days can exceed 200,000 people, making it officially one of the highest-footfall streets in Asia.
Shopping tip: Visit on weekday mornings (before 11 AM) to avoid the heaviest crowds. Weekend afternoons are an experience in themselves if you enjoy the energy of a bustling market, but be prepared for slow walking pace.
Pondy Bazaar — Heritage Market, Modern Shopping
Pondy Bazaar — officially Panagal Park area — is the historic heart of T Nagar's commercial identity. The market evolved around the needs of the Tamil Brahmin community that originally settled Thyagaraya Nagar, and its character has deepened over decades. Today you will find a mix of traditional silk saree establishments alongside contemporary fashion boutiques, electronics stores, and snack vendors.
The Pondy Bazaar Metro Station is located here, making it extremely accessible from other parts of Chennai. Many visitors to Family Stay combine a shopping trip to Pondy Bazaar with a metro ride to other city attractions.
North Usman Road — Jewellery and Silk Capital
North Usman Road is where Chennai's most celebrated jewellery and silk establishments have their flagship outlets. Nalli Silks, established in 1928 and now one of India's most iconic silk saree brands, has its main store here. G.R. Thanga Maligai, PSS Gold Palace, and multiple other major jewellers line this road, making it the destination of choice for wedding shopping, gold purchases, and high-quality traditional textile buying.
Saravana Stores — The Department Store Phenomenon
Saravana Stores is a T Nagar institution that defies easy categorisation. Spread across multiple buildings on Ranganathan Street and surrounding lanes, it operates as an aggressively priced department store selling everything from clothing and footwear to electronics, homeware, and luggage. The pricing is legendarily competitive, and the store's sheer scale — often quoted as one of the largest retail operations in Chennai — means that most shopping lists can be completed in a single visit.
Pothys — The Silk Saree Destination
Pothys on South Usman Road is one of Tamil Nadu's most respected silk saree retailers. The store's selection of Kanjivaram (Kanchipuram) silk sarees is particularly celebrated, and the air-conditioned shopping environment makes browsing a pleasure even during Chennai's warmest months. Pothys is typically a highlight for families with wedding-related shopping on their itinerary.
Panagal Park — The People's Garden
While not a shopping destination per se, Panagal Park (the large park at the centre of T Nagar) is worth mentioning as an anchor point for navigating the neighbourhood. It serves as a pleasant green break between shopping sessions, and the streets immediately surrounding it on all sides offer excellent variety in both shopping and food.

Practical Shopping Tips for T Nagar Visitors
Family Stay is steps away from Chennai's greatest shopping streets
• Carry cash. Many smaller shops on Ranganathan Street prefer cash, though larger stores accept cards and UPI.
• Leave heavy bags at your hotel. Family Stay guests are welcome to store shopping parcels at our reception if they wish to continue exploring before returning to their room.
• Watch for seasonal sales. Pongal (January), Tamil New Year (April), and Deepavali (October–November) are when T Nagar's already-competitive prices fall further during shopping festivals.
• Budget extra time. T Nagar's streets, particularly on weekends, move at the pace of their millions of daily visitors. Rushing rarely works.
• Hydrate. Chennai's climate — warm and humid for most of the year — makes outdoor shopping physically tiring. Carry water and take breaks in the air-conditioned stores.
